Wolfhorde – Deathknot (2010) Review

I found these guys pretty randomly, and it seems like there isn’t a whole lot of buzz about them…so I’ll go ahead and generate a little buzz.  I really liked this album a lot.  It’s pretty traditional folk metal.  The album implements mostly growly vocals rather than clean vocals.  There’s plenty of bass to drive the music, and there are a ton of traditional instruments.

This album starts pretty fast, and the first song has almost a springy sound to it.  The first few songs are fun, and they have pretty moments where the music slows and the folk instruments kick in a bit more.  However, they (to me) aren’t as memorable as some of the later songs.  The album makes a few atmospheric changes, occasionally switching from bouncy and upbeat metal to more mischievous-sounding metal.  The whole album has a sort of playfulness to it that keeps the album cohesive and unifies the more upbeat songs with the darker ones.

I thought the middle of the album had the strongest songs.  My favorite songs from the album were songs number 4 through number 8.  They had the most atmosphere, and they tended to be a bit darker and more dynamic than the rest of the album.  I’d definitely recommend giving these guys a listen; even though their music isn’t the most original folk metal I’ve ever heard, this album is certainly fun and it has some interesting moments where the metal instruments and folk instruments really compliment and play off of each other.
