I stumbled across these guys pretty randomly. They’re a new metal band the Hudson Valley, not too far from where I go to school. I don’t generally find myself listening to this type of metal, but the more I listen to these guys, the more I like them. Logan pinned their sound down best: when he first heard them, he said they sound like early Mastodon mixed with some Kruger. They’re less of a wall of sound than Kruger, but they’re a little crunchier and rougher than Mastodon’s early stuff.
 This EP has four songs. The third and fourth song are stronger than the first two. The first two songs, “Sea of Red” and “Uprise”, are fast-paced, tight metal. The band made some interesting, somewhat dissonant choices when writing the melody. There are only three instruments: guitar, bass, and drums. Each instrument is well represented in the music; you can clearly hear the clear, occasionally twangy bass underneath the chunkier guitar, while the drums drive the beat. The sound isn’t super-complex, but it’s definitely fun and easy to get into.
The third and fourth songs, “Maiden” and “The Hallows”, offer more variety than the first two songs. The composition is stronger; there are more tempo changes and unusual chord choices thrown in. The drumming really shines through in these two songs, especially when the music slows and allows the drums to build up momentum. The bass is particularly strong in “The Hallows”, and I found that to be my favorite song of the four. I thought it had the most atmosphere and it seemed to be overall the most “complete” and mature song on their EP.
These guys seem like they’d put on a pretty great show. The type of music they play is made to be enjoyed in person; the pace and intensity of the music is perfect for live performances, and their sound is clean enough (read: they’re not a wall of distorted sound) that you’d actually be able to hear the quality of the music at any venue with halfway decent amps.
