Mirrorthrone – Gangrene (2008) Review
YOUTUBE
This is by far my favorite Mirrorthrone album to date. To say this album is ambitious is an understatement, especially considering that the band is really just one guy (Vladimir Cochet) doing all the instrumentals and composition and such. The music is sweeping and grandiose, and it’s full of resentment towards humankind. Excellent.
The songs are lengthy–they average about ten minutes per. However, they’re very complex, and most of the tracks do not get boring or repetitive despite the fact that they’re rather long. The music contains plenty of piano/keyboard on top of the more traditional metal instruments, and each song plays like some unholy hybrid of classical and metal, with Vladimir’s screeching/growling/singing above it all. My personal favorite tracks are the second and third, titled “No One By My Side” and “The Fecal Rebellion” (unfortunately…). The album does get a bit weaker with the last three songs, but they’re still dramatically improved over the songs on Mirrorthrone’s previous two albums.
This music makes fairly heavy use of keyboards, and the drums are done by a drum machine rather than by Vlad (can I call him that?). If those things are off-putting to you, you may not like Mirrorthrone. However, I’d recommend trying to listen a bit anyways. Can’t hurt, can it?
